Importance of checking your vitamin D levels

Approximately 1 in 5 people within the UK have are low or deficient in vitamin D.

With our increasingly indoor existence and changing diets, it's becoming harder for us to get our required vitamin D from the sun alone

A test should be considered by everyone as it helps establish if your current lifestyle and diet is providing as much vitamin D as you think it is.

Who needs it

While the test is suitable for everyone, people within the Department of Health's "at-risk" groups should strongly consider checking their levels as they have an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency.

  • All pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Infants and young children under 5 years of age
  • Older people aged 65 years and over
  • People who have low or no exposure to the sun
  • People who have darker skin

How to use

We send the testing kit out for you to use at home. All you must do is place four blood spots onto the collection card from a quick and painless nick of the finger. Full instructions are included in the pack you will receive.

Using the prepaid envelope, the collection card is then sent to City Assays, who analyse the sample for Sandwell and West Birmingham trust.

From the spots of dried blood on your sample card, the laboratory at City Assays uses a liquid chromatography mass spectrometry method to measure the Vitamin D in your blood. They measure for Vitamin D2 and D3, reporting the total and D2 and D3 results.

The results are supplied within 10 working days of the lab receiving your sample.

The results are emailed directly to you and BetterYou. From this, we will provide you with a bespoke supplementation plan to help increase or maintain your levels. You will also receive a discount code for a complimentary Vitamin D Oral Spray relevant to your results, which you can redeem through our website (includes free delivery - UK only).

FAQs

Why should I choose BetterYou at-home health checks?

By using a BetterYou at-home health check you get to see an accurate insight into your levels of a specific nutrient, along with a detailed supplementation plan to help you maintain or elevate your levels for optimal health.

We will also provide you with a complimentary oral spray to help you kick-start your journey to optimal health, all included in a single one-off price.

When is the best time to do my vitamin D test?

For convenience, we suggest you collect your sample first thing in the morning. This helps get an accurate understanding of your level that has not been influenced by time of day or intake of food.

While your vitamin D levels may be higher in the summer due to the natural increase in sunlight, there is still no 'best' time to test. Ensuring your levels are optimal throughout the entire year will provide you with the most health benefit.

Is the vitamin D test kit suitable for children?

Yes. The vitamin D test service suitable for children aged 6 months and above. Children under 6 months of age should have their levels tested by a GP.

The test kit requires a small pin prick to the side of the finger to be able to collect blood spots for testing. Everything you require is enclosed in the pack, including a plaster and a complimentary vitamin D oral spray based on individual results.

We recommend using the lancet on the heel of the foot of babies and younger children as it provides a larger surface area and reduces discomfort for the child.

Does your vitamin D test show 'active' or 'storage' vitamin D?

The blood spot kits measure 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which reflects body vitamin D stores. This is generally accepted to be the most useful indicator of vitamin D status.

The active form is 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D but this is only measured in very few, rare clinical situations. It is also very unstable and difficult to measure so only a few labs in the country do actually measure it.

Do I need to stop supplementing before checking my vitamin D levels?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. If you are currently taking a vitamin D supplement and want to check the impact of your supplementation routine, then you can take the test straight away.

However, if you're looking to discover your 'baseline' vitamin D levels (diet and lifestyle alone), then we would recommend a 'wash-out' period of 4-6 weeks, as this is around how long 25(OH)D (vitamin D) stays in the body.
